Many expiring names never reach the public drop: the registrar auctions them first. These are the main marketplaces for expired and expiring domains.
| Service | What it is for |
|---|---|
| GoDaddy Auctions | The largest marketplace for names expiring at GoDaddy. |
| Dynadot | Registrar that also runs expired-domain auctions and backorders. |
| NameJet | Pre-release and pending-delete auctions. |
| SnapNames | Backorders for deleting names, shared with NameJet. |
| DropCatch | Drop-catching service: pay only if they catch the name. |
How auctions work and how to bid well: expired domain auctions.
Auction or drop?
Names expiring at GoDaddy, Dynadot and some other registrars go to that registrar's own auction about 25 to 35 days after expiry. If nobody buys them there, they continue to the registry's pending delete and then drop, and that is when they appear on our pending delete and deleted domains lists. For a name others will want, place backorders with more than one drop-catching service; you normally pay only the one that catches it. See auctions, backorders and drop-catching.
